Pictures to target specific sounds

Nursery and School Age

How to help their speech along

Important things to do before beginning work on specific sounds

Check the ages sounds develop
For example it’s perfectly normally for a two year old to struggle saying “j” – sounds are mentioned on this chart

Is your child ready?
Sound awareness skills must be in place before children are able to work on individual sounds see our resources on developing these skills here

Do you need to see a Speech Therapist?
If your child’s speech sounds are more than 6 months behind where they should be for their age you should see a Speech and Language Therapist (ask your GP, Health Visitor, nursery or school to refer, or contact your local SLT department to see if they take referrals directly from parents).
The creator of these picture cards has also created a helpful guide

Find the picture which uses the beginning sound – practise writing the letter
We would advise staying with the consonant sounds as vowels can vary (e.g. the ‘a’ sound in ‘ant’ vs aeroplane is different)
